Choosing a trainer is hard.
Why go with Dog Training Vermont?

  • We provide in-home training, which is best for you and your pet.
  • Our Positive Training Methods reward your dog getting it right, rather than punishing him for getting it wrong.
  • Our five-star success rate ensures owners get the results they need.
  • Jill Halstead is certified in training, with over 20 years' experience, and she loves dogs!

Why is in-home training best?

Your dog is most comfortable in his home environment.  It is here that we can evaluate him with the least distractions.  Home visits avoid any potential stress he might have from going to a new place or being with other dogs for training. It allows us to focus on his needs, and ensures the best results.

What are Positive Training Methods and why are they better?

Picture
Positive Training Methods are a science-based system that teaches the dog what you want him to do, and rewards him for that behavior.

Other methods (including “balanced” training) discipline the dog for doing “wrong” using shock collars (or e-collars), prong collars or punishment. Punishment-based methods don’t help your dog learn what to do, they simply get him to avoid certain behaviors for fear of repercussions. They also risk side effects like developing a poor relationship with your dog and increasing his stress and fear.

If, for example, your dog growls at the delivery man, a punishment approach may make him stop growling, but it doesn’t deal with the reason he is growling. If the reason is fear, and the delivery man gets too close, this could lead to attacking and biting. Positive Training teaches the dog that the delivery man is his friend, and there is no reason to growl, rather it is a happy time to greet a new visitor.

Why do you have such a high success rate?

Meeting in your home provides the opportunity to observe your dog’s behavior where he is most comfortable and we see what issues need attention. Then we teach him new behaviors and we give you the tools to reinforce the learning after we are gone. We provide a written report and offer free follow-up care.

We train puppies, adolescents and addressing aggression in adult dogs. Dogs with stress or anxiety can also be helped.  Most of our clients are extremely happy, and report a much better relationship with their dog.

Client Reviews...

“Jill is a wizard with dogs... and people! She came into our house and immediately had our anxious puppy, Brie, relaxed and attending to her -- it was magic! Jill also had us more relaxed as she listened to our concerns with compassion and without judgement while we discussed our puppy and what might be possible.”  - J.K.   Montpelier, VT
